As the Carolina Panthers navigate the opening week of training camp, head coach Dave Canales is balancing player development, roster evaluation, and health management with a precise approach.

Addressing the injury front, Canales provided updates on several key players, including guard Robert Hunt, cornerback Mike Jackson, and rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II.

Hunt and Jackson are currently working through typical early-camp tight-back situations—what Canales dubbed "camp back"—while Brazzell is managing minor knee soreness.

Thanks to an early start courtesy of the Hall of Fame Game schedule, Carolina benefits from an extra week of prep to get players treated and acclimated without rushing them back onto the field.

"Fortunately for us, we have this bonus week with the Hall of Fame game where a lot of the things that end up popping up early on in camps happen for us about a week earlier," Canales explained. "So we can get ahead of it, get a treatment plan, and then dose them the right way to get them back out there."

When asked about the NFL Players Association reviewing practice film regarding player acclamations, Canales expressed confidence in the program's standards, citing his prior experience with similar league checks during his tenure in Seattle.

On the field, camp attention is rapidly shifting toward Tuesday, when full pads come on. That transition will be pivotal for young talents like offensive tackle Monroe Freeling, who is transitioning to right tackle while taking daily snaps against high-caliber edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Patrick Jones. It will also mark a major milestone for running back Jonathon Brooks as he works through contact adaptation.

Meanwhile, new defensive anchor Devin Lloyd and wideout John Metchie III are already establishing prominent roles. Lloyd’s relentless preparation and natural presence at inside linebacker have elevated the urgency across the entire unit, while Metchie’s immediate chemistry with former college teammate Bryce Young has provided an instant boost to the passing attack.

"There's an immediate chemistry," Canales said of Young and Metchie. "There's a big-time trust factor there... He’s another veteran guy who approaches every day with great focus and brings a lot of competition to that room."
